TMJ/TMD Treatment in Spartanburg, SC

If you are living with persistent jaw pain, frequent headaches, or a clicking and popping sensation when you open your mouth, you are not alone. Temporomandibular joint disorder (commonly referred to as TMJ or TMD) affects millions of people and can significantly impact your quality of life. At Cedar Spring Family Dentistry, we are proud to offer comprehensive TMJ/TMD treatment right here in Spartanburg.

Understanding TMJ/TMD: What Is It?

The temporomandibular joint connects your jawbone to your skull and acts as a sliding hinge on each side of your face. When this joint or the surrounding muscles and ligaments become strained, misaligned, or inflamed, the result can be chronic discomfort that radiates throughout your head, neck, and face. Many patients spend months or years searching for answers before they realize their dentist may be the key to lasting relief.

Common Signs & Symptoms of TMJ/TMD

TMJ disorders can present in many different ways, and symptoms are not always limited to the jaw itself. If you are experiencing any of the following, we encourage you to schedule an evaluation with our team:

  • Jaw pain or tenderness, especially when chewing or speaking
  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening or closing your mouth
  • Difficulty opening your mouth fully or jaw locking in an open or closed position
  • Frequent headaches or migraines, particularly upon waking
  • Ear pain, ringing in the ears, or a feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Facial pain or soreness around the cheeks and temples
  • Neck and shoulder tension or stiffness
  • Teeth grinding or clenching, also known as bruxism
  • Uneven or uncomfortable bite that feels like your teeth do not fit together properly

Our Approach to TMJ/TMD Treatment

We believe that conservative, non-surgical care should always come first. Our TMJ treatment process begins with a comprehensive evaluation to understand the unique factors contributing to your condition. From there, Dr. Birch develops a personalized treatment plan that may include one or more of the following:

  • Bite and occlusion analysis: A detailed assessment of how your teeth come together, identifying areas of imbalance or strain that may be contributing to your symptoms.
  • Precision orthotic splint therapy: A precisely crafted oral appliance designed specifically for your mouth. The precision orthotic splint is designed so that as the teeth rest on the splint it allows the musculature deep within the TMJ to gradually relax over time.  As that musculature relaxes the joint can gradually seat more fully into the socket and then the orthotic is adjusted slowly over time as the joint changes position.
  • Bruxism evaluation and management: If teeth grinding or clenching is a contributing factor, we identify the pattern and develop strategies to protect your teeth and relieve pressure on the joint.
  • Restorative planning: In some cases, worn, damaged, or missing teeth can contribute to bite imbalances that aggravate TMJ symptoms. Dr. Birch can create a comprehensive restorative plan to rebuild proper occlusion and support long-term joint health.
  • Long-term occlusal maintenance: TMJ treatment is not a one-time fix. We work with you on an ongoing basis to monitor your progress, adjust your appliance as needed, and maintain the improvements you have achieved.

Dr. Birch's Advanced Training Through the Dawson Academy

At Cedar Spring Family Dentistry, TMJ treatment is more than a general service. It is a specialized focus backed by advanced education. Dr. Birch completed the Dawson Academy mini-residency, an intensive, year-long program recognized as one of the most respected continuing education pathways in dentistry. This training provided Dr. Birch with deep expertise in occlusal analysis, bite evaluation, and the relationship between your jaw joints, muscles, and teeth.

The Dawson Academy approach emphasizes a thorough, complete-dentistry philosophy. Rather than simply treating symptoms, Dr. Birch evaluates the entire system—your jaw joints, your bite, your muscles, and your teeth—to identify the root cause of your discomfort and develop a treatment plan designed for long-term relief.
